Acqua alta
High sea level (literally "High Water") can happen in Venice: more intense tides, rain, adverse wind that pushes sea water into the lagoon....and soon you can find Piazza San Marco under a foot of water.
Campo San Fantin - La Fenice theater
The name refers to the mithological phoenix who is born again and again from its own ashes. This name was given when it was reconstructed, in 1836, after being destroyed by the first fire.
Venitians had decided that the theater would be rebuilt "come era et dove era", i.e. how it was and where it was. Only the perimeter wall were left standing aftet the second, devastating fire of January 29th, 1996. Relevant donations from Venice and the entire world allowed its rebirth with the original shape designed by architect Selva (1790-1792).
Since 2005, we can admire again its five levels of opera boxes, finely decorated in red and gold. This theather, among the most famous in the world, is one of the top sites for international opera.
The Grand Canal
The Grand Canal unwinds in the heart of the town. The Venitians call it Canal Grande or Canalazzo. It is the center, not only geographical but also symbolic for the town, and it transmits, to anyone who happens to be on it, the feeling of being part of a unique landscape.
La Salute
Baroccan masterpiece, Santa Maria della Salute was built, between 1631 and 1687, to thank the Virgin Mary for the end of the plague.
The architect, Longhena, adopted an original octogonal plant, where the central space is surrounded by six chapels. In the sober interior, we must mention several painting by Tiziano, Tintoretto, Salviati and Giordano. The exterior of the building shows a real baroque appearence, with two domes of different size, two bell towers, impressive stairs, many volutes and 125 decorating statues. All this makes La Salute one of the best known images along the Great Canal, where every year, on November 21st, a celebration takes place in honor of the Virgin of Redemption.
Rialto
San Marco
The Saint Marc square (named after the evangelist, Christian protector of the city). This square, together with the Saint Marc Basilica and Bell Tower and the Dogal Palace, is the heart of the town of Venezia.
